Abstract:     When a speech signal that may include a sibilant consisting of one or more formants is received, frequencies and selectivity factors are determined for each sibilant formant in the speech signal. Then, the frequencies and selectivity factors are compared to a set of empirically derived criteria to classify the sibilant sound.

  • receiving a speech signal including at least one sibilant;
  • identifying a quality factor for a formant of the at least one sibilant;
  • identifying a center frequency for the formant of the at least one sibilant; and
  • assigning an identity to the at least one sibilant using the quality factor and the center frequency identified for the formant of the at least one sibilant.
