Using PDF Express
Updated: Nov 29, 2004

What PDF Express is:
PDF Express is a bulk download tool that allows you to download as many as 500 PDFs at one time, all in one convenient zip file.

What to use PDF Express for:
PDF Express saves you downloading time and effort. Instead of downloading each PDF individually, PDF Express will combine the PDF documents you request into one zip file for you to download. The PDF Express zip file also makes it easy for you to store your patents in one place using a minimum of disk space.

PDF Express and Derwent:
When using PDF Express for a Derwent Result Set or Work File, the PDFs you receive will be the original images corresponding to the basic patents for the Derwent records you selected.

How to open the PDF Express zip file:
You will need an unzip utility to open your PDF Express zip file (it is not self-extracting). This applies whether you open the file directly from the download or save it to disk and then open it.

Most user operating systems have a zip/unzip utility built-in and optioned in a manner that the zip file will open automatically when you double-click it. If this is not the case with your operating system (check your user manual if you are in doubt), then you will need to install an unzip utility to open your PDF Express zip file.

WinZip, PKWARE, and Aladdin Systems are all providers of popular unzip utilities. You may also find that there are some very reliable freeware and shareware programs available.

What is included in the PDF Express zip file:
The PDF Express zip file contains the PDFs you requested as well as a text file listing all of the patents in the zip file and any problems that may have been encountered with the patents. The text file is named status.txt and you can open it with any standard text editor or word processor.

Download technology:
PDF Express utilizes streaming technology and downloads using HTTP protocol. Firewall issues that sometimes occur with FTP protocol seldom occur with HTTP protocol.

Restarting an aborted download:
Because PDF Express uses streaming technology, there is a constant stream of data coming down to your local system and timeouts rarely occur. If for some reason your download is stopped before it is completed, an incomplete PDF Express download can be restarted with any restart utility. Most internet browsers come equipped with a download helper that also restarts incomplete downloads. If your browser does not have a restart helper, there are several utilities on the market, GetRight is an example.

Bulk printing:
Windows file folders allow you to print all (or selected) items from a folder in one print request. You can use this function to print all (or selected) PDFs from your PDF Express zip file at once.

Open the zip file and save the contents into a folder. Use Select All or Ctrl Click to select the ones you want to print. Then use the Print command, from the File menu.
