The scheduled rollout of the 8th edition of the International Patent Classification (IPC) by the patent offices was recently postponed from January 1, 2005 to January 1, 2006.
The IPC system is currently in its 7th edition, which went into effect January 1, 2000. In March 2000, a strategic plan for reform of the IPC system was approved and the 8th edition of the IPC was scheduled to become effective January 1, 2005. The IPC Reform Committee of Experts, however, recently postponed it and the reformed IPC will now apply to all applications published after January 1, 2006.
Despite the delay, Thomson Scientific is already working on plans to update products to reflect the IPC reclassification changes.

The Electrical Patents Index (EPI) Manual Codes system is a hierarchical classification and indexing system for abstracts of Electrical and Electronic engineering patents in the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) available on Delphion (and other hosts). EPI Manual Codes cover the novel technical details disclosed within the patent and application — they enable an extra level of precision and accuracy when searching patent information.
Thomson Scientific is currently reviewing the manual codes to ensure the system is current with technological advances. We are inviting customers to review the current codes also and make suggestions for refinement. Suggestions can be submitted through July 31, 2004.
