Delphion Delivers U.S. Patent Application Data

Delphion Research users can now search U.S. patent applications to gain earlier, better insight into companies' patenting activities

CHICAGO — August 3, 2001 — Delphion Inc., a leading provider of intellectual asset management software and services, today announced it has enhanced its Internet-based intellectual property research service at www.delphion.com with U.S. patent application data, including complete information about an application's genealogy. Delphion also announced it has added to its website features that further streamline the online-purchasing of patent documents and simplify access to help and training information.

Starting immediately, Delphion Research users can search the full text of U.S. patent applications to gain insight into companies' patenting activities before patents are granted. This information can be used to identify patent licensing opportunities, track competitors' actions, and find and qualify acquisition targets.

"Patents provide a tremendous source of information about companies, including their strategies and product roadmaps," said Woody Ritchey, president and CEO of Delphion. "With the availability of U.S. patent applications, our Delphion Research customers can gain access to the information well before the patents are granted. This type of advance notice can provide a company with significant competitive intelligence and a key business advantage." Delphion's implementation of the U.S. patent applications includes the following features, some of which are exclusive:

  • Genealogy Information
    On the Delphion Research website, users can track the genealogy of a U.S. patent application by seeing a list of the other applications and granted patents of which it is a continuation. Users can then link directly to the other applications and granted patents, which is an exclusive feature of the Delphion website. With this continuation information, users gain a more in-depth understanding of the development of a patent application, and deeper insight into companies' patenting strategies.

  • Application Images
    Delphion provides online access to the application documents so users can view, print or download them as readily as other patent documents.

  • Original Text Mark-up and Formatting
    By processing the patent application data as HTML, Delphion has preserved the original text mark-up and formatting of the applications, including extended character sets and tables. This significantly improves the readability of the applications by enabling users to see such things as trademark and copyright symbols, foreign characters, and bold and italicized text.

To help Delphion Research users most effectively and efficiently search the U.S. patent applications database and other patent collections, Delphion offers a host of powerful features that enhance research, including:

  • Delphion Integrated View
    The Integrated View is an exclusive feature that enables users to link directly from a U.S. patent application to its applicant business profile and other patents in the same classification and more.

  • Saved Search
    With Delphion's Saved Search feature, users can save patent searches so they can quickly conduct the same searches again later. This can streamline users' work by helping them avoid the time-consuming task of repeatedly constructing the same queries.

  • Alerts
    With the Alerts feature, Delphion Research users can receive automatic updates by email on patents that match the criteria of their saved searches. For example, users could set up an alert based on a patent classification search, and be automatically notified of new U.S. patent applications in that classification as soon as they're filed. This enables users to monitor competitor and industry patent activity more easily and efficiently.

  • Cross-Collection Searching
    In addition to the bibliographic text, full text and images of U.S. patent applications, Delphion Research currently offers access to the following patent collections, which can be searched individually or in any combination:
    • U.S. patents (granted) — including bibliographic text, full text and images;

    • European patents and patent applications (EP-A/B) — including bibliographic text, full text and images;

    • Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patents — including bibliographic text, full text and images;

    • Patent Abstracts of Japan — including bibliographic text and representative images; and

    • INPADOC — which includes complete legal status and global family data.

In addition to expanding its patent data collections with U.S. patent applications, Delphion has enhanced its research service with:

  • Single-Click Download
    This feature enables users to purchase or download a patent document (PDF format) with a single click directly from a result set - saving users time by eliminating the need to open the Integrated View or click through multiple Web pages to purchase a patent document.

  • Delphion Help Center
    Delphion Research users can now find all help-related information, such as FAQ documents and training materials, in a single section of the website. By consolidating this information, Delphion provides its users with easier and faster access to help and training.
