New Delphion Research Technology Reveals a Patent's Genealogy

"Citation Link" enables business professionals to identify new licensing opportunities, gain competitive intelligence

CHICAGO — May 6, 2002 — Delphion Inc., a leading provider of software and services that enable companies to fully exploit intellectual property, today launched on its Delphion Research website a new analytical tool that graphically displays the relationships between patents. With this tool — Citation Link — business professionals can identify companies associated with a particular innovation, which can reveal new licensing opportunities and provide competitive intelligence. In addition, Citation Link can help business professionals identify a patent's significance in the market by showing the number of times it is cited by other patents, a measure often used to indicate the asset's value.

Citation Link joins Delphion's complete set of Internet-based analytical tools that enable both novice and expert patent researchers to quickly and easily gain meaningful information from the millions of patent documents worldwide.

"With the sophisticated visualization technology employed by Citation Link, users can instantly get a more illuminating understanding of a patent's genealogy," said Cindy Poulos, director of product management for Delphion Research. "Citation Link extends Delphion's leadership in providing business professionals with the tools they need to take full advantage of patent information."

About Citation Link
The Citation Link tool graphically displays both the patents that are cited by a selected patent (called backward citations or references) as well as the patents that cite the selected patent (called forward citations or references). Users can choose to display the citations in a "tree" format to view both forward and backward citations at once, or in a timeline format to identify trends in a particular field of innovation in one, five or 10-year increments.

Users can employ a host of tools to more quickly and easily gain an understanding of the data presented in the citation map. They can:

  • plot patent relationships based on a variety of fields, such as title, assignee, inventor, classification code, and more;

  • color-code a specific patent or a group of patents to enhance analysis;

  • choose to show or hide specific patents or branches of the graphical map to focus on particular segments;

  • choose another patent in the map to become the new focal point;

  • zoom in or out on specific segments of the map and navigate large maps using a thumbnail overview;

  • print or save the display for inclusion in reports or presentations; and

  • save the resulting list of documents as a Work File (created with a Delphion tool for saving personalized lists of patents) for further manipulation and analysis.

Availability and Pricing
Citation Link is available immediately to all Delphion Research subscribers. Between now and May 30, 2002, Delphion subscribers can use Citation Link for free. Following this trial period, Delphion Unlimited subscribers can continue to take advantage of Citation Link for no additional cost. For Delphion Premier subscribers, Citation Link will be $25 per day.
