CHICAGO June 17, 2002 Delphion Inc. today announced plans to deliver later this year an enterprise software solution that addresses the entire lifecycle of intellectual assets, enabling companies to effectively manage these assets and leverage them to increase corporate value. Delphion, which currently provides companies with the premier website for researching patents on a global basis, will deliver:
-
enterprise software for integrating the functions of everyone in a company who deals with intellectual property, streamlining the company's processes for creating, managing and leveraging these assets; and
-
professional services to enable users of the software to both integrate the solution into their existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) software platforms, and modify their existing business practices to incorporate "best in class" intellectual asset management (IAM) processes.
"Today, intellectual assets are a primary driver of corporate value and companies are seeking solutions to manage these assets at the highest levels," said Woody Ritchey, president and CEO of Delphion. "Across all industries and all regions of the world, companies are now viewing intellectual assets not just as a means to protect innovations, but a powerful way to seize markets, generate new revenue streams, gain competitive advantages and boost shareholder value. Delphion is at the forefront in delivering enterprise-level solutions that enable companies to transform their intangible resources into strategic corporate assets that generate value."
Market trends underscore companies' new focus on exploiting intangible assets such as
patents, copyrights, trade secrets, trademarks, brands and know-how. Patent licensing revenues have soared
to $110 billion from $15 billion in just the last 10 years1. A 2001 survey of 272 senior executives from
across North America showed that protecting proprietary research, valuing intellectual property, and
extending patent protection are their top concerns2. In addition, new rules for accounting are emerging,
requiring companies to more accurately calculate and report the value of their intangible assets.
As a result, companies are seeking solutions to help them better leverage these assets.
According to Gartner Inc., intellectual property asset management systems will be adopted by more than
50 percent of companies in the pharmaceutical, aerospace, high technology, consumer goods and biomedical
sectors between now and 20053.
Delphion's solutions are based on the business processes of IAM leaders like IBM Corp.
and Dow Chemical Company, which are already generating significant revenue from effective management of
intangible assets.
Delphion's solutions will enable companies to employ a strategic, enterprise-level
approach to IAM, integrating and synchronizing the business processes of their R&D, product development,
legal, finance and other business groups. With Delphion's solutions, companies can:
-
better align intellectual property strategy with business strategy, and provide executive
oversight of the entire intellectual property lifecycle, from idea generation to patenting
to licensing;
-
accelerate innovation and R&D effectiveness;
-
build shareholder value by articulating, measuring and strategically managing intellectual assets;
-
create a significant source of new revenue through intellectual property licensing and sales;
-
optimize their patent portfolios, reducing costs to maintain dormant intellectual property; and
-
empower employees across the enterprise with intellectual property knowledge to better
monitor competitor activities, perform due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, make
decisions about buying or building technologies, minimize the risk of infringement, and
identify revenue-generating licensing opportunities.
"Expanding upon our leadership in intellectual property research services with our
enterprise software solution, Delphion is uniquely positioned to deliver the most complete solution
set to fully exploit intellectual assets," said Ritchey. "We are committed to helping our customers
leverage their intellectual assets for optimum value."
In conjunction with today's announcement of its strategic direction, Delphion unveiled
its new website, which now provides in addition to its patent research services a comprehensive
resource for business leaders to learn more about IAM. The new website, www.delphion.com, features case
studies, white papers, ROI tools and other materials to assist business leaders in learning how to
profit from their intellectual assets.
Intellectual asset management is the practice of transforming intellectual property
(such as patents, trademarks and copyrights) and other intangible assets (such as trade secrets, brands,
business processes and employee know-how) into strategic corporate assets. IAM generates value by aligning
the creation and use of intangible assets with core business strategies, enabling more effective technology
licensing and lowering intellectual property creation and maintenance costs. In addition, IAM can generate
value by helping create new uses for intellectual property, and by enabling a company to create a better
return on its R&D investments, by more closely align its R&D resources with strategic business goals.
Delphion Inc. provides software and services that enable companies to research, create,
manage and strategically leverage intellectual property and other intangible assets. The company's solutions
are based on the IAM technologies and best practices of IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM), from which Delphion spun out
in 2000. Delphion is a core company within the Internet Capital Group (Nasdaq: ICGE) network. Delphion is
based in the Chicago suburb of Lisle, Ill. Its main phone number is 630-799-0600, and its website address
is www.delphion.com.
