CHICAGO November 5, 2001 Delphion Inc. today announced the addition of four executives who will spearhead the company's development and delivery of new software and services that enable companies to maximize the value they generate from their intellectual assets. The executives include Gordon Petrash, who created and led Dow Chemical Company's market-leading intellectual asset management (IAM) operations; and Nigel Davies, who has nearly 20 years of experience leading the development of enterprise software solutions.
Delphion, which spun out of IBM Corp. in 2000 and has established itself as a leading provider of intellectual property research services for the world's top companies, is developing the industry's most comprehensive array of solutions for managing intellectual assets. Delphion's solutions will include its market-leading research services, software to manage intellectual assets across an enterprise, and consulting services for IAM strategy development, process improvement and systems integration.
Improving IAM is among the top priorities for companies today. Between now and 2005 alone, more than 50 percent of companies in the pharmaceutical, aerospace, information technology, consumer goods and biomedical sectors will implement systems to better manage their intellectual assets, according to a recent report from Gartner Group.*
"Now more than ever, companies are seeking to fully leverage their intellectual assets to establish and protect markets, generate new revenue streams and boost shareholder value," said Woody Ritchey, president and CEO of Delphion. "To help companies succeed, we've assembled a team of industry all-stars who will enable Delphion to deliver best-in-class IAM technologies and services. We're charting a bold new course, one that will help companies leverage their intellectual assets as strategic corporate assets."
- Gordon Petrash, chief intellectual property strategist
Petrash is one of the world's foremost authorities on intellectual asset management. Prior to joining Delphion, he was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he led the building of an IAM consulting capability, implementing processes and systems for Fortune 100 companies across a broad spectrum of industries. Previously, Petrash was Dow's first global director of intellectual asset and capital management. He built and led a global organization that increased Dow's intellectual property licensing revenue to $125 million from $25 million, and reduced intellectual property maintenance costs by $50 million. An IAM visionary whose work has been cited by numerous books, journals and studies, Petrash has created and conducted IAM workshops and symposiums for organizations such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, Brookings Institute, Institute for International Research, Hoover Institution, M.I.T. and the Licensing Executives Society.
- Nigel Davies, senior vice president of development and operations
Davies oversees the technological development of all Delphion solutions, including its Internet-based research services and enterprise software. Davies has more than 18 years of experience in product development, project management and sales in the software and systems industries. Before joining Delphion, he was vice president for product development with HK Systems, the largest supplier of supply chain execution and material handling equipment in North America. He was a founding member of the company's Irista division, where he led the design of supply chain execution and event management products. Prior to joining Irista, Davies held key management and development roles at British Aerospace Computer Aided Manufacturing. He is the vice chair of membership of the Open Applications Group, the largest publisher of XML standards for application-to-application and business-to-business systems integration; and has served on the group's executive board for the past three years.
- Ralph Schroeder, director of consulting services
Schroeder leads Delphion's newly-established consulting services group. His expertise includes strategic business planning, intellectual property lifecycle management, and the design and implementation of systems that support innovation, business alliances and licensing. Prior to joining Delphion, Schroeder helped establish and manage the IAM practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers. He assisted clients with intellectual property process improvements, strategic planning, technology and assessments, licensing transactions, portfolio management and benchmarking. His clients included global companies in a broad range of industries, including biotechnology, pharmaceutical, information technology and telecommunications. Previously, Schroeder served as an intellectual property attorney for Beigel & Sandler LLP.
- Rob Williamson, director of product management
Williamson oversees enterprise software solutions for Delphion. He brings to Delphion more than 15 years of experience in software development and product management for leading technology companies. Prior to joining Delphion, Williamson was a director at Pitney Bowes Inc., where he built and led the company's product management team that successfully developed a production tracking and management system for electronic and paper mail processes. Previously, he served in senior product-management positions for enterprise technology solution providers System Software Associates Inc. and Sterling Software Inc.
Intellectual asset management is the practice of transforming intellectual property (such as patents) and other intangible assets (such as business processes and employee know-how) into strategic corporate assets. IAM generates value by enabling more effective technology licensing and lowering intellectual property creation and maintenance costs. In addition, IAM can generate value by helping create new uses for dormant intellectual property, and by enabling a company to better align its R&D with strategic business goals.
Delphion Inc. provides intellectual asset management software and services. In 2000, the company was spun out of IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) and funded by Internet Capital Group (Nasdaq: ICGE). Delphion's solutions are based on technologies and best practices developed and implemented by IBM, a world leader in intellectual asset management. Delphion is based in the Chicago suburb of Lisle, Ill. The company's main phone number is 630-799-0600, and its website address is www.delphion.com.
