Delphion's Gordon Petrash to Speak at United Nations' World Intellectual Property Organization Conference

As businesses worldwide confront challenges of exploiting intangible assets, Petrash to address use of intellectual property to increase corporate value

CHICAGO — March 18, 2002 — Delphion Inc., a leading provider of software and services that enable companies to fully exploit their intellectual assets, today announced that Gordon Petrash, the company's chief intellectual property strategist, will be a featured speaker at the World Intellectual Property Organization's Conference on the International Patent System, which is March 25-27, 2002, in Geneva, Switzerland.

In his presentation, Petrash will be addressing the issues of valuing patents and using them as financial instruments. "Today more than ever, patents are power in the world economy," said Petrash. "Because of this, it is just as important that companies be able to value patents as they do their tangible assets, like factories and product inventories. Best practices for valuing intangibles like patents are now emerging worldwide, providing companies with the tools they need to transform patents into business value."

Petrash is one of the world's foremost authorities on intellectual asset management (IAM). Before joining Delphion last year, he was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he led the implementation of IAM processes and systems for Fortune 100 companies. Earlier, Petrash was Dow Chemical's first global director of intellectual asset and capital management. An IAM visionary whose work has been cited by numerous books, journals and studies, Petrash has conducted IAM workshops for organizations such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, Brookings Institute, Institute for International Research, M.I.T. and Hoover Institution.

Intellectual asset management is the practice of transforming intellectual property (such as patents) and other intangible assets (such as business processes and employee know-how) into strategic corporate assets. IAM generates value by enabling more effective technology licensing and lowering intellectual property creation and maintenance costs. In addition, IAM can generate value by helping create new uses for dormant intellectual property, and by enabling a company to better align its R&D with strategic business goals.
